What makes web sites unreadable?

Here are some of the things we see day to day...

Text disappears under the next part of the page

This is a menu for a web site about dogs. Each menu link is marked with a pretty paw print in a green block. The green blocks are given a fixed height a little more than the paw print.

When the reader increases the text size on their computer, the menu link words become bigger than the green box and start to disappear.

If you use a fixed height for your menu links like this many people will not be able to move around your web site.

White text disappears on white background

On this web site, the key messages are in white text on blue background that has rounded corners.

When the reader increases the text size on their computer, the words overflow off the background onto the white page behind so cannot be read.

If you use a fixed size background like this many people will find your key messages are unreadable.

Paragraphs overflow onto the next

This web site has been designed a lot like a newspaper. There are lots of short articles laid out across and down the page.

When the reader increases the text size on the computer, the layout of the page remains the same but the words no longer fit. They overflow onto other parts of the page and become jumbled and impossible to read.

If your web page layout is rigid like this, its not readable to a lot of potential customers.
